South Africa has recently lost some of its most beloved entertainers—people who shaped our music, theatre, comedy, and film industries. Their contributions will never be forgotten, and their legacies will live on. Let’s take a moment to remember these incredible artists.

Athol Fugard (1932 - 2025

A true legend of the theatre world, Athol Fugard passed away at the age of 92. If you’ve ever studied drama or watched a powerful South African play, chances are his work influenced it. His storytelling, especially in plays like The Blood Knot, Sizwe Banzi is Dead and The Island, captured the struggles of apartheid era South Africa like no other.

The world has lost one of its greatest playwrights, but his words will continue to resonate for generations.

Winnie Khumalo (1973 – 2025)

The South African music industry lost a powerhouse when Winnie Khumalo passed away on January 7, 2025, at the age of 51. She started young, dropping hits at just 15 years old, and worked with legends like Brenda Fassie and Bongo Maffin. After taking a break, she made a massive comeback with I Just Wanna Live My Life, which had everyone dancing.

Her voice, energy, and passion for music will be sorely missed.

Ebenhaezer Dibakwane (1994 – 2025)

Comedian and actor Ebenhaezer Dibakwane’s passing has left a massive gap in the entertainment world. Known for his clever humour and natural comedic timing, he had the kind of talent that made you laugh even when he wasn’t trying. His unexpected departure is a huge loss for comedy lovers everywhere.

He starred in local productions including Netflix’s Miseducation, MTV Shuga, Ashes to Ashes and Emoyeni

Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane (1973 – 2025)

Kwaito fans are feeling this one deeply—Doc Shebeleza, real name Victor Bogopane, passed away on January 9, 2025, at 51 years old. He was one of the pioneers of the kwaito sound, blessing us with bangers like Ghets Ghetsa and S’kumfete. Beyond the music, he was also a philanthropist, using his influence to fight against HIV/AIDS.

His contributions to both the music scene and the community won’t be forgotten.

Crystal-Donna Roberts (1984 - 2025)

A familiar face on South African screens, Crystal-Donna Roberts’ passing is another heartbreaking loss. Whether she was lighting up the big screen or giving a stellar performance on TV series like Arendsvlei, she always brought something special to her roles. The film and TV industry won’t be the same without her.

Her films included The Endless River, Krotoa, The Number and Asseblief & Dankie. She also won multiple SAFTAs for her brilliance and dedication to her craft.

All of us at ConsumerRewards sends our deepest condolences to all of their families, friends and fans. Though these stars may no longer be with us, their work, talent, and impact will continue to inspire. South Africa will never forget them. 💔
